Choosing a Crib
Your baby's bed
Avoid old, used or borrowed cribs which might have loose parts or pieces and crib slats that might pose a strangling hazard. (See box for important crib safety specifications.)
What to look for when shopping for a crib:
● Distances between crib slats are no more than 2 ⅜ inches
● Drop sides, when lowered should be at least nine inches above the mattress support
● Drop sides, when raised, are at least 26 inches above the mattress support
● Crib mattress fits snugly, with no more than two fingers width between crib side and mattress
● There should be no loose or peeling paint, rough corners, edges or splinters
● Mattress should have a sturdy support that connects to the crib sides
● You should be able to lower the mattress as your child grows
● Wheels are a convenient feature when changing sheets and cleaning the nursery
● There should be rail covers for the tops of the bed railing to prevent your toddler from chewing on wood
