Delicate diapering

A common cause of diaper rash - red, swollen bumps and chafing in the diaper area - is the constant friction between a wet diaper and a baby's delicate bottom. Another culprit, particularly in babies older than six months, is ammonia that forms with the combination of stools and urine. Applying a diaper rash ointment at the first sign of irritation can provide relief, but it's preferable to try to prevent diaper rash in the first place by keeping your baby as dry as possible. Some diapering tips:

Change your baby often, usually before and/or after each feeling, using an absorbent diaper. Cleanse the soiled area with a soft washcloth and water, a disposable baby wipe, baby oil or mild baby soap. If your baby's skin is irritated and you have help, have that person gently hold your baby's hands to offer comfort.
Keep your baby's bottom diaper-free and exposed to the air for a while each day and smooth on a thin layer or petroleum jelly or zinc oxide cream before putting on a fresh diaper to help decrease any irritation.
Always wipe your baby, particularly a baby girl, from front to back to help prevent the transfer of fecal matter to the genital area.
If your baby has been circumcised, ask your healthcare professional about appropriate care. Some circumcision techniques require no special care afterward and others require you to use an ointment with each diaper change. Contact your healthcare professional if there is swelling, redness, odor or pus. Normal skin healing may cause the skin to appear yellow and look like pus. you can always have it checked.
