family -  bring your baby home

Welcome Home!

While the idea of parenthood occupied your thoughts for nearly a year, the reality of family life really takes hold when you bring your newborn home. It's a wonderful and thrilling feeling to be on familiar ground, perhaps with friends and relatives gathered around, as you introduce your son or daughter to the world. The moment can also be trying. Who gets to hold her? Are the camera lights too bright? What does that funny face he's making mean? Is all the excitement too much for your baby - or for you? These parents have been there, and their suggestions can work for you.

Schedule visits
I was afraid that everyone would show up at our doorstep the minute we brought Jonathan home and I really wanted to have time to spend alone with my family for the first couple of days. My husband called everyone and arranged specific times for each family member or friend to drop by - after the third day. Everyone understood and by the time they came, I was ready for them

Record the big moment
When we brought Cecilia home from the hospital, I walked her from room to room, showing her her new home. My husband took pictures of her first time in each place. We put all the pictures together in a Welcome Home album that Cecilia, now there, loves looking at

Hire help
My daughter was born three weeks early and the house was not at all ready for her arrival. I was panicking about bringing her home when I didn't even have her crib set up. so I did something I never dreamed I'd do: I hired a cleaning service to come in and scrub the place from top to bottom. I also asked them to set up the baby's furniture, which they did. That was the best $100 I ever spent

Be prepared
If I had the coming-home event to do over again, I'd make absolutely sure that I had everything I needed - diapers, film, camera batteries, tiny-size stretches, cotton swabs - before I got home. During the first day, my husband had to make at least 10 trips to the store as we kept finding that we needed things we didn't have
