Baby skin care - Baby skin may always seem soft and smooth. Bodysuit - one piece outfit that snaps closed over the diaper at the crotch.
Bouncer - infant seat that allows a baby to bounce and play or sleep while in the same room with a parent who may be engaged in other activities.
Breast pump - an aid for expressing breast milk to allow a mother to pump when she's unavailable for breastfeeding; can be powered by hand, battery or electricity, depending on needed usage.
Colic - almost daily periods of inconsolable, inexplicable crying beginning at six to eight weeks of age and lasting until 12 to 16 weeks; most responsive to rhythmic motion and white noise.
Convertible car seat - safety seat used rear-facing for infants younger than 12 months and less than 20 pounds. It can also be used forward-facing after a child exceeds the manufacturer's weight and height limit for using the seat rear-facing.
Cradle cap - oily flaking or a waxy, yellow crusting of the scalp (soborrheic dermatitis), preventable by daily hair brushing and shampooing (be sure to get behind the ears).
Diaper rash - red swollen bumps and chafing in the diaper area caused by friction between a wet diaper and a baby's delicate bottom and contact with urine and stool; can be reduced by diaper changing 8 to 10 times daily, consistent use of a perfume-free diaper cream or ointment and thorough cleansing, especially after stooling.
Digital thermometer - mercury-free thermometer that indicates temperature numerically.
Double stroller - allows a parent to tote two children; stroller that carry three or four children are also available.
Feeding system - bottles, cups, spoons and bowls designed specifically for use at each feeding milestone.
Infant car seat - safety seat used rear-facing-only for infants up until one year of age and least 20 pounds.
Jogging stroller - three -wheeled stroller balanced to allow a parent to push a semi-reclined child while walking, jogging or even running (depending on wheel size).
Layette - a baby's first wardrobe plus nursery, bathing and travel necessities.
Mobile - moving toys and shapes, sometimes accompanied by sound, which hang over a crib. (For safety, this should be removed once the baby can reach it, at about five months.
Monitor - two-way device that allows a parent to hear the baby's sounds from another room or part of the house; some have light indicators that register the strength of the baby's sounds, useful when household background noises might make them inaudible.
Playard - rectangular-shaped, portable enclosure in which a baby can play or take a nap.
Travel system - an infant seat/stroller combination that simplifies moving a baby from car to stroller by allowing the seat to snap into the stroller (while the seat base stays strapped into the car).
Umbrella stroller - lightweight, foldable stroller that has curved, umbrella - like handles and can be manoeuvred around tight spaces.
