Parents tell
Read regularly
Even when your child is an infant, read him (her) to sleep. From the time my son was born, I've always read to him before putting him in the crib. The rhythmic speech that comes with reading puts him right to sleep
Natalie Marchanski, New Jersey
Make a map
My four-years-old daughter and I drew a bedtime map, to show visually what bedtime routines had to be followed.
On the portion that shows the bathroom, we marked the toilet and sink to remind her to go to the bathroom, wash her hands and brush her teeth.
On the bookshelf shown on the map, we put a big star to show that the treasure of a bedtime story comes next.
Then we look at the map to find the bed, where we say our prayers and kiss good night

Have a reward system
We keep a bedtime chart on each of my children's doors.
After they accumulate 10 stars for going to bed without too much fuss, they earn extra bedtime story
Kathy Fenton, Harford, Connecticut
Calm down first
I find that the more stressful the day has been, the earlier the bedtime routine has to start.
Neither of my two children can sleep properly if they're angry or upset about anything. On more difficult days I have them take their baths right
after dinner and try to arrange something pleasant to do, like watching a short tape together or playing a board game, to calm them down
